Bonhams jewellery sales achieve four-year high in Asia
The Bonhams Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite sale held on 26 November 2022 achieved a total of HK$54m (£5.7m), reaching a four-year high for the auction house.
A 50.24ct ‘Pigeon’s Blood’ ruby and diamond necklace led the series, selling for HK$9.8m (£1.5m).
A Canadian philanthropist’s collection of Tiffany & Co jewellery, including pieces by Jean Schlumberger, realised more than HK$8M (£850K) with 90% of lots sold.
Discussing the sale, Bonhams director of jewellery and head of jewellery department Asia, Stewart Young said: “The bidding was robust across genres, but especially for items that are rare in the market, such as our top lot – a 50.24-carat ruby and diamond necklace boasting the prestigious ‘pigeon’s blood’ colour with exceptional clarity, [plus] a fancy red diamond ring, and a private collection of Tiffany & Co jewellery from a Canadian philanthropist, in which many lots sold for multiples of their estimates.
“With strong results in both traditional live sales and online sales, our auction total achieved in 2022 thus far has marked Bonhams’ four-year high for jewellery in Asia, which gives us confidence going into 2023.”
