Jewellery, watches from Elton John’s personal collection auctioned at Christie’s, New York
The auction will unfold through a blend of eight live and online sales. The inaugural in-person sale is slated for the evening of Feb 21, while online bidding spans from Feb 9-28
USA: British music icon and six-time Grammy recipient, Sir Elton John, has joined forces with Christie’s New York to orchestrate the auction of approximately 900 personal items from his esteemed collection. Termed ‘The Collection of Sir Elton John: Goodbye Peachtree Road’, the auction signifies his farewell to his expansive 13,500-square-foot condominium in Atlanta.
Acknowledging his penchant for abundance, Sir Elton confessed, “I’m afraid I’m not a minimalist. It was a bit of a nightmare to clean and a bit of a nightmare to know where everything was.” Describing his Atlanta abode as his sanctuary adorned with cherished souvenirs from across the globe, he elucidated, “It was my man cave full of things I just loved, mementos from everywhere in the world, and things that I got up every day and they all gave me inspiration.”
The auction will unfold through a blend of eight live and online sales. The inaugural in-person sale was slated for the evening of February 21, while online bidding spans from February 9 to February 28.
A cornucopia of items is set to grace the auction block, ranging from an original Banksy masterpiece valued between US$1 to 1.5 million (C$1.4 to 2 million), ’70s-era photographs of Sir Elton, a resplendent Versace sofa, stage costumes from his tours, to a grand Yamaha Conservatory piano. Notably, among these treasures is Sir Elton’s Cartier “Crash” timepiece, the centerpiece of the jewellery and watch lots. Crafted from 18-karat gold in 1991, this rare timepiece, one of only 400 ever created, is estimated to fetch approximately US$70,000 to 100,000 (C$94,000 to 135,000).
“We take immense pride in presenting this multi-category sale, featuring a refined assortment of photographs, artworks, fashion, and costumes – a testament to a man’s eclectic vision, artistry, and impeccable taste,” says Tash Perrin, Deputy Chair of Christie’s Americas.
