Qatar hosts ‘Year of Culture’ event to explore wealth of Moroccan Berber jewellery

The exhibition highlighted Morocco’s richness as a crossroads of several civilizations and cultures, and is part of the ‘Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture’ programme aimed at nurturing Arab culture

Doha: Recently, Qatar’s capital city Doha hosted a ceremony at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), celebrating Moroccan culture and heritage. A sizeable number of Moroccan expatriates and locals of different nationalities attended the event to view the exquisite collection of Berber (Amazigh) jewellery from Morocco’s Royal Palace.

The collection of Amazigh, exhibited for the first-time outside Morocco, comprised 200 items of historical and cultural significance, meant to symbolize Morocco’s various regions and ethnic groups, from the Atlas Mountains to the southern provinces.

This collection of silver jewellery honours the women who have preserved these traditions and the craftsmen who laboriously carved these remarkable pieces.

On display to the public until May 20, this collection is a significant component of the National Jewelry Museum in Rabat’s permanent exhibition of Moroccan Oudayas.

The evening was also an opportunity for Moroccan artist Othmane Belkadi to display a portrait of an Amazigh woman adorned with jewels. The public had the chance to view the exceptional collection of jewellery artworks as part of the ‘Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture’ a project coordinated in partnership with the Moroccan Embassy in Qatar. These stand in for the several Moroccan regions, illustrating the wealth of the nation as a nexus of diverse civilizations.

The Qatar-Morocco 2024 Years of Culture programme includes a variety of fascinating activities and events aimed at nurturing Arab culture, sharing experiences, and strengthening ties between the two countries. As part of the Qatar-Morocco Cultural Year 2024 initiative, the Moroccan city of Marrakech will host Fashion Trust Arabia (FTA) this year.
