Sachin Jain of Jorness Jewels experiments with unconventional materials to craft bespoke jewellery
The Indian-origin jewellery designer and gemologist brings a rich background in jewellery design from Rajasthan to Dubai and uses sapphire glass, special cuts of semi-precious stones and even wood to forge distinctive designs
Nestled in the bustling cityscape of Dubai, Sachin Jain’s journey from Rajasthan to the cosmopolitan landscape of the Middle East is an odyssey steeped in creativity and artisanal finesse. Over the past two decades, Jain has carved a niche for himself as a designer and entrepreneur in the jewellery industry by blending tradition, artistry and contemporary flair and transforming precious metals and stones into timeless pieces.
In a recent interview with The Retail Jeweller, Sachin Jain, Founder of Jorness Jewels talked about his journey and how time spent in Hyderabad during his formative years ignited his fascination for jewellery design, manufacturing and gemology.
Could you share the journey behind the inception of your brand?
Hyderabad is my second home where I started my learning career when I was in high school. I delved into the intricacies of jewellery design, manufacturing and gemology. Subsequently, my journey led me to Dubai. I graduated from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and this honed my expertise. Having collaborated with different manufacturers during my initial phase, I felt compelled to form my own team to manifest my designs authentically. In 2013, I established Jorness Jewels driven by my passion to create jewellery that resonates with my artistic vision.
Can you elaborate on your approach to clientele and your design inspirations?
Our boutique operates on an appointment basis, focusing on bespoke and designer jewellery. We prioritize a personalized experience over conventional displays. Our clientele predominantly comprises elite individuals from diverse backgrounds seeking a fusion of their concepts with my artistic ingenuity. I assist them in transforming their ideas into wearable art pieces. Nature significantly influences my designs – animals, birds and elements of nature inspire our creations. We also specialize in brooches and men’s accessories, addressing a niche that craves unique, high-quality jewellery.
You’re involved in educational institutions that help you bond with budding talents. How does this connect with your brand’s ethos?
Teaching jewellery design and manufacturing at art schools aligns with our brand ethos. It allows me to propagate jewellery as an art form, fostering connections within the artistic community and amplifying the perception of jewellery beyond mere adornments.
What materials fascinate you the most in your designs?
While metals serve as support elements, it’s the gemstones that truly captivate me. Emeralds, rubies, sapphires and other precious stones fuel my creativity, enabling me to craft unique combinations.
Are there any challenges you’ve faced in the Middle Eastern market?
Fortunately, my journey has been relatively smooth. However, emerging designers often struggle due to financial constraints and a lack of support. Established entities need to nurture and support budding talents for a more inclusive industry landscape.
What innovative frontiers are you exploring for your brand’s expansion?
Jorness Jewels aims to continue redefining jewellery as an art form, creating masterpieces that transcend trends. We’re venturing into unconventional materials like sapphire glass, special cuts of semi-precious stones, and even wood to create a distinctive line that merges non-precious elements with precious gems. We strive to foster creativity, embrace innovation, and forge stronger connections within the global artistic community.
