Dubai launches ‘Talent Atelier’ to cultivate Emirati jewellery designers

The initiative, in collaboration with Van Cleef & Arpels, aims to enhance skills and foster creativity in the local jewellery-making scene
Dubai: The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has unveiled the inaugural edition of its ‘Talent Atelier’ programme, developed in partnership with L’ÉCOLE Middle East, School of Jewellery Arts, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. This initiative aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of Emirati designers in the field of jewellery making, reinforcing Dubai’s status as a global cultural hub and creative incubator.
Running from September 2 to November 30, 2024, the programme will focus on three key areas: the history of jewellery, the intricacies of gemstones, and advanced jewellery-making techniques. A select group of 12 Emirati designers will participate in hands-on courses and workshops at L’ÉCOLE’s Dubai Design District campus. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from industry experts, explore antique jewellery collections, and gain insights into gemmology.
Outstanding performers among the designers will be rewarded with a five-day educational trip to Paris in November, where they will engage with the curriculum at L’ÉCOLE’s new campus, Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau. Selection criteria will include creativity, material exploration, and effective application of learned skills.
Dr. Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, CEO of the Arts and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, highlighted the programme’s role in fostering Emirati talent. “The Talent Atelier exemplifies our commitment to supporting and empowering designers, enriching Dubai’s creative landscape, and driving innovation within the jewellery and gemstone sectors,” he said.
Sophie Claudel, Director of L’ÉCOLE Middle East, described the programme as a transformative experience that promotes cultural dialogue and creativity among participants. The comprehensive curriculum includes over 10 courses and workshops, totaling more than 40 hours of instruction from expert jewellers, gemmologists, and art historians.
Additionally, participants will benefit from resources at the Al Safa Art and Design Library, which houses a dedicated collection of educational materials focused on jewellery-making and gemmology, open to the public.
The ‘Talent Atelier’ programme not only aims to refine the skills of its participants but also seeks to invigorate Dubai’s jewellery design scene with fresh talent and innovative ideas.
