Paris: French luxury brand Van Cleef & Arpels has introduced a new high jewellery collection inspired by ancient Egypt, continuing its long-standing practice of interpreting historical themes through a contemporary design lens.

Titled ‘Fascinating Egypt’, the collection features around 180 pieces and draws from centuries of global fascination with Egyptian civilization. Influences range from early European encounters during Napoleon’s campaigns to the deciphering of hieroglyphics by Jean-François Champollion and the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, all of which fuelled waves of Egypt-inspired design across the decorative arts. The maison also revisits its own archives, having created Egyptian-inspired jewels since the 1920s and serving elite clientele from the region.

The collection reinterprets traditional motifs into modern forms. Lotus flowers are rendered as structured ruby-set clips, while pharaohs and queens appear as gem-set figurative brooches. Mythological references are translated into sculptural designs using diamonds, emeralds, lapis lazuli and turquoise, balancing narrative detail with graphic precision.

Key pieces include the Rivage égyptien necklace, featuring 37 Zambian emerald drops set beneath stylized motifs inspired by Nile-side flora and fauna. Another highlight, the Déesse ailée Mystérieuse necklace, incorporates ruby-set wings and a detachable 14.05-carat Type IIa diamond that can also be worn as a ring. The maison’s ‘Mystery Set’ technique is prominently used, allowing gemstones to be set with minimal visible metal to create uninterrupted colour surfaces.

The collection blends archaeological references with broader cultural influences, including Art Deco Egyptomania, cinema, comic art and the geometric language associated with Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis design movement. This layered approach positions Egypt not merely as a historical reference but as an evolving creative theme. Ancient symbols are rendered with a distinctly modern energy, proving that Egypt remains less a historical period than a living source of imagination.

For global luxury brands, geography-based collections such as ‘Fascinating Egypt’ serve as powerful story-telling tools. They enable maisons to localize inspiration while maintaining global appeal, creating culturally rich narratives that resonate with diverse clientele. Such collections also support high-value, limited-edition production, driving exclusivity and reinforcing brand heritage while appealing to collectors across regions.

Founded in 1906, Van Cleef & Arpels is headquartered in Paris, though it operates as a subsidiary of the Swiss luxury group Richemont. It has an extensive international retail network spanning major luxury markets across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
