Angolas’ MIREMPET prepares for second international diamond conference

The agenda for the Angola International Diamond Conference 2024 includes critical discussions on geological research, diamond exploration, polishing techniques, technological advancements, logistics, and the semi-industrial sector

Saurimo: The Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas (MIREMPET) has announced the upcoming Second Angola International Diamond Conference (AIDC), scheduled to be held from October 23 to October 24, 2024, in Saurimo, Lunda Sul Province. The theme for this event is “Angola: Investing Together to Make a Difference in the Community”.

Minister Diamantino Pedro Azevedo emphasized the significance of this conference, which aims to gather experts and stakeholders from the Angolan diamond industry to exchange insights, forge partnerships, and explore new opportunities. The inaugural AIDC took place in November 2021, setting the stage for continued dialogue and collaboration in the sector.

The conference will once again be hosted at the Saurimo Diamond Hub, a comprehensive facility that integrates various facets of the diamond industry, from mining and processing to administrative functions. Minister Azevedo highlighted the hub’s role in enhancing Angola’s diamond value chain and boosting industrial capacity.

He further underscored the strategic importance of the diamond sector in Angola’s economic diversification efforts, noting the significant potential of the Luele mine in increasing national diamond production and contributing to state revenue. Located near the renowned Catoca mine, Luele is estimated to hold 628 million carats of diamonds over a 60-year lifespan, marking it as one of the most promising discoveries in recent years.

The agenda for the Angola International Diamond Conference 2024 includes critical discussions on geological research, diamond exploration, polishing techniques, technological advancements, logistics, and the semi-industrial sector. Key topics such as the Kimberley Process and recent G7 developments on Russian sanctions will also be addressed, with a dedicated panel featuring global industry leaders.

Ministers of mines from various African diamond-producing nations will participate in the conference, alongside international experts supporting Angola’s efforts in economic integration and sustainable growth. Special attention will focus on natural diamonds versus synthetics, featuring insights from the Natural Diamond Council on sustainability and social responsibility initiatives.

The event will feature exhibitions showcasing geological information, mining operations, equipment, and support services, providing a platform for networking and business development within the industry.
