Omani jewellery designer wins audience award at inflow Expo

Amal’s dome-shaped silver ornament caught the eyes of onlookers

Muscat – Amal bint Salim al Ismaili, a lecturer at Sultan Qaboos University, has garnered international recognition for her jewellery design “Dome,” which won the Audience Award at the prestigious Inflow Expo held in Hungary.

Competing against 389 submissions from 29 countries, “Dome” distinguished itself with its unique storytelling and its fusion of traditional Omani aesthetics with contemporary elements. The design was inspired by a cherished childhood memory of Amal’s grandmother selling silver items to a traveling merchant in North Sharqiyah.

In her work, Amal also addresses the decline of Omani silver craftsmanship, a concern stemming from rising global silver prices. The “Dome” design incorporates elements of Bedouin head ornaments, beautifully reflecting the rich heritage of the Omani desert.

By utilising locally tanned leather and traditional crafting techniques, Amal has developed a collection that captures the essence of Omani culture while embracing modern design sensibilities. Her victory at Inflow Expo highlights her exceptional talent and her commitment to preserving and promoting Omani heritage through art.

The jewellery exihibition and conference programme was divided into three key components: a scientific conference, a group exhibition showcasing contemporary jewellery design, and interactive artistic-scientific workshops. Together, these elements will create a synergy that links art with scientific exploration.

On September 1, attendees engaged in a knowledge-building workshop from 9 AM to 12 PM, designed to encourage collaboration and skill development among participants.
