James Gleeson and father Noel, of Wilcox and Carter Jewellers

This is the situation at Wilcox and Carter Jewellers, in Wide Bargate, Boston, which this year has turned 60 years old.

The business was founded in 1959 by John Wilcox and Sid Carter, before being purchased by Noel and Kathleen Gleeson, retail jewellers from Derby, in January 1981 – with the name and the staff being retained.

Over the years, it has evolved from a traditional jewellery business into a fusion of fine jewellery brands, fashion jewellery brands, and watch brands.

In 2013, the business welcomed James Gleeson, Noel and Kathleen’s son.

Having graduated from the University of Derby with a French and accounting degree, he learned the trade independently as an area manager for jewellery manufacturer Domino Jewellery.

He said: “We are delighted to be celebrating 60 years of trading in Boston. We love the town and its loyal public. We look forward to providing quality products and services to the people of Boston.”

Asked for the secret to a long-running business, he pointed to ‘a variety of discerning product collections’, ‘embracing community’, ‘dedication to quality and service’, and ‘always going the extra mile for all of your customers’.
