Dubai: Emirati designer Hamda Qubaisi was recently commissioned to create a bespoke commemorative gold badge marking the 30th anniversary of the Dubai World Cup, in honour of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The custom-designed gold badge, set with precision diamonds, incorporates the Dubai World Cup emblem alongside elements of the UAE ribbon motif, reflecting the cultural significance of the event, which is one of the most celebrated occasions in the global horse racing calendar. The design draws from the heritage of horse racing in the UAE, a sport deeply embedded in national identity.

Speaking to Grazia magazine, Qubaisi highlighted the inspiration behind the piece and how she sought to highlight what horse racing represents within the UAE. “Horse racing is a sport defined by strength, discipline, and elegance… a rhythm and grace that feels both commanding and refined,” she said.

The badge features a sculptural circular form, chosen to represent continuity and legacy, with diamonds arranged to create a seamless flow of light. “It creates a sense of continuity and flow… reflecting progression and enduring excellence, which are central to the legacy of the Dubai World Cup,” Qubaisi noted in the interview.

For the designer, the commission marks a significant milestone, placing emerging Emirati talent at the centre of one of the region’s most high-profile global events. “Creating this piece in honour of His Highness is a true privilege… it is an expression of respect and admiration, translated through design,” she told Grazia.

The gold badge project also signals the rising prominence of independent jewellery designers within the UAE’s luxury ecosystem. Qubaisi’s eponymous label, By Hamda Qubaisi Jewellery, is built on a philosophy that blends architectural form with story-telling, creating pieces that carry meaning beyond their aesthetic. “My work is guided by the idea that jewellery should hold meaning beyond its form… created to carry a sense of identity and presence,” she said in the interview.

Industry observers note that such commissions highlight growing institutional support for Emirati creative talent, whileshowcasing it on the global stage.

The 30th Dubai World Cup, held on March 28, 2026, served as a global platform for Dubai’s cultural and economic positioning.

First held in 1996, the Dubai World Cup was the vision of Sheikh Mohammed, and has evolved into one of the world’s leading horse racing events.Held annually at the Meydan Racecourse, itattracts the finest racehorses, trainers and jockeys, as well as international royalty, dignitaries and style icons, and is regarded as one of the most anticipated occasions on the region’s fashion and social calendar.

By Hamda Qubaisi Jewellery was launched in the early 2020s. The brand operates primarily through a made-to-order and private client model, complemented by a growing digital presence and selective showcases at regional exhibitions and events, positioning it within the niche, high-design segment of the UAE jewellery market.
